Minister Icyang Parod of the Council of Indigenous Peoples presided over the unveiling ceremony of the newly established Peoples' Language Learning Center at National Chengchi University (NCCU) on October 23. The center aims to encourage indigenous people in the northern metropolitan area and indigenous students in higher education institutions to actively enroll in indigenous language courses, becoming new advocates for the promotion and preservation of indigenous languages.

Over half of the indigenous population has relocated to metropolitan areas, with more than 180,000 indigenous people residing in Northern Taiwan. NCCU has a wealth of experience in compiling indigenous language teaching materials and offering language courses. The center will now serve as a new hub for indigenous people in metropolitan areas to learn language and teaching skills so indigenous languages can take root and be passed down sustainably to urban areas in the future.

Minister Icyang stated that since 2018, the Council of Indigenous Peoples has set up Indigenous Peoples' Language Learning Centers in seven higher education institutions, including National Taiwan Normal University, National Pingtung University, and National Taitung University. The council has invested over NT$160 million in grants, offering a total of 664 credit classes and 883 non-credit classes. The cumulative enrollment has reached 15,000 students, with 2,218 individuals obtaining language certifications.

Minister Icyang also emphasized that indigenous language education has expanded from elementary to high school, requiring more qualified language teachers. Therefore, in 2022, the council made special amendments to the incentive program for indigenous talent, adding incentives for those who obtain medium and advanced certification in indigenous languages so that all college students can engage in indigenous language learning at the language learning center, contributing to the sustainable preservation of indigenous languages.
