On March 9, 2022, the Austronesian Forum signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Canada's First Nations Tax Commission (FNTC), which was co-signed by Forum Secretary-General Akiku Haisum and FNTC Chairman Manny Jules. The Taipei Economic and Cultural Offices in Canada, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Offices in Vancouver, and the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei all sent representatives to witness. This was the first MOU signed with any foreign affairs since it resumed operations in 2018.
Secretary-General Akiku Haisum indicates that the Austronesian Forum is a permanent organization promoted by the Council of Indigenous People (CIP), Republic of China (Taiwan). Currently, there are 14 members and 1 observer. The main mission is to promote the exchanges and cooperation in languages, cultures, industry developments, human resources, etc. Since 2020, Canada has participated in various projects and attended the annual meetings to express support and provide opinions.
With the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Vancouver serving as a bridge, the two parties have reached a consensus. It is hoped that this MOU will establish a cooperation platform for the indigenous peoples in Taiwan, the Austronesian peoples in the world, and the Aboriginals in Canada, who will jointly promote the exchanges and cooperation in education, cultures, languages, social policies, economic and business development, international affairs, sports, traditional medicines, etc.
