The recommending neologisms in ethnic languages of indigenous peoples in Taiwan in 2016 have been released.

Council of Indigenous Peoples (CIP) and Ministry of Education released 90 recommending neologisms in ethnic languages of indigenous peoples in Taiwan in 2016 and put them on the website of CIP (website address: http://www.apc.gov.tw/). By creating and generalizing the ethic neologisms, the connections are produced between ethic languages and modern life to increase the usage of ethic languages, activate the ethic languages and promote the sustainable development of ethic languages. Welcome indigenous people in different fields to consult and use.

In this year, there are 90 neologisms in ethnic languages of indigenous peoples and 1,440 neologisms in total. These are borrowed words which are usually used in the modern life of indigenous people. This measure is not only for convenience to apply, but also develops with the development of ethic languages modernization. The categories and contents of principal terms are shown as follows:

1.Life terms: 49 terms including swill-cooked oil, night snack, buffet and so on.

2.Social culture: 17 terms including Council of Indigenous Peoples (CIP), history, trade and so on.

3.Human and interpersonal relationship: 11 terms including doctor, village head, household registration and so on.

4.Natural environment: 10 terms including glacier, fossil and so on.

5.Medical terms: 3 terms including melancholia, virus and so on.

CIP said, the so-called “neologism” is the Chinese term which presents new concept, is accepted by the public and is widely used in social life. The collection is created as the term in ethic language by the word-formation rules. In addition, CIP wishes the indigenous people can use these recommending neologisms to activate and inject new vigor into the sustainable development of the ethic languages.
