The Council of Indigenous Peoples (hereinafter referred to as the Council) was scheduled to hold “4th Word Contest of Indigenous Language” on June 2 and 3, 2018 (Sat. and Sun.) in Gymnasium of National Taiwan Normal University. There were 81 teams from different parts of the country and the number of teams hit the historical record. There were 531 participants in total who would strive for the highest honor in the Contest in the two-day competition.
The Contest was one of the major events held by the Council to drive Indigenous Peoples students to learn indigenous languages. By reciting indigenous words and strengthening students’ abilities of listening and speaking, the frequency of indigenous language used in daily life of students could be higher. The Council stated that since 2015, the first year of the Contest, it was well-received and highly appraised among people from all walks of society. This year, the Council invited 70 Indigenous Peoples language teachers to serve as chief umpires and judges.
The participating teams for this year came from 15 counties all over the country and 81 teams were consisted of 29 primary school, 28 middle school, 11 endangered language primary schools and 13 endangered language middle schools; the primary school teams and middle school teams all took part in the preliminary contests in their cities and counties and won the first and second prize in the contests. In order to actively encourage the endangered language teams to participate in the Contest, it was determined that the teams of endangered languages could directly take part in the national finale once they were grouped. As a result, the teams signed up for the Contest increased by 15 compared with those of last year (9 teams last year).
Icyang, the director of the Council, expressed that after the approval of Indigenous Peoples’ Language Development Act, it was expected to see the achievements of language rejuvenation from bottom to top. The Council also subsidized the organizations promoting 16 indigenous languages so that they could hold language learning, preservation, inheritance and development on their own in the future, therefore expecting that 16 indigenous languages could be activated.
