The 2015 Examination for Aboriginals Language Proficiency Certificate, Awards Ceremony

The Council of Indigenous Peoples released the result of 2015 Examination for Aboriginals Language Proficiency Certificate on  March 9, 2016 and the awards ceremony was held on March 16, 2016.


  The awards ceremony was presided by MayawDongi, the chairman of the council. He took a chance in the ceremony to promote up the cultivation of learning aboriginals language by promoting the aboriginal language learning since young age and encouraging all the young aboriginals to take up the responsibility of aboriginals language inheritance. 


  There were 15,183 candidates took part in this examination with 9,616 candidates passed, achieving a total passing rate of 63.33%. This test was divided into elementary and medium level. Though the scopes of the exam for the two levels were different, both required oral and written parts. Since the implementation of elementary and intermediate level examination in 2014, the number of non-aboriginal candidates has increased annually. In 2015, there were 163 non-aboriginal candidates passed the exam with a 71.18% passing rate; while in 2014, there were 56 candidates passed the exam with a 70.00% passing rate. In comparison, the numbers of candidates who passed the exam in 2015 were 3 times more than the numbers of candidates in 2014, an increase of 1.18% passing rate. There was one Malaysian candidate who passed the intermediate level certificate examination. Another concerned is that there were nearly thousand elementary school candidates took the exam in 2014 and 2015. Though the numbers of elementary school candidates who passed the exam is lower in 2015, the passing rate increase significantly, which is 15.17%. In 2015, there were 490 elementary school candidates passed the exam with a 66.58% passing rate; while there were 529 candidates passed the exam with a 51.41% passing rate in 2014. Thus, it is clear that the revival of aboriginal language should be started from young generation and it will be the performance indicator in the future.


  The council said that according to the analysis of candidates’ survey forms, family and school play the most important role and it’s the most common place in studying aboriginal language, it is then followed by the Aboriginal Language Online Learning website. Thus, it is obvious that the council acts a significant role in promoting the learning of aboriginals’ language through various means either in language proficiency learning or cultural heritage. In addition, the sense of self-identity in aboriginal language and culture of the candidates has increased and they are willing to continue learning the aboriginal language. The council said, the foundation of aboriginals should be started in schools and families, while the digital learning materials provide online self-learning, and this will be the core method in promoting aboriginal language in the future.
